Total Garage Vol 5 Mixed By Resketch

Last week was great for us! We hosted rooms at 2 massive events and launched this blog. Last Thursday we brought the bass to the basement of Sound Control, for Drop the Mustard's latest party featuring a headlining spot from Aeroplane in the main room, and on Saturday we hosted Club Academy at Manchester uni's student festival Pangaea. For this we built our own custom made Total Garage DJ Booth so expect to see some pictures of that in action soon.

Thanks to all the DJ's that played for us over the 2 events, Oldboy, Kilic, Roops and Polka. Big Up!

Now onto this week...

This Friday we are back at our regular home of Joshua Brooks (Manchester City Life's best venue 2010), with King Thing and Resketch from Night Audio dropping in to give us a 2 hr B2B showcase of their original tracks and releases, alongside some of their favorite garage anthems.

Supporting them will be Myself and Polka as well as newcomer to Total Garage, Humbug.

Check out the facebook event page here.

It's a Smith Ting!

Got an exclusive banger for the blog from Murkage Cartel's most accomplished producer Smith! This is hot off the press, just been bounced down and sent over so it's fresher than the fresh prince eating a bowl of fresh fruit.

He's also got loads of great tracks, remixes and edits covering many different styles and genre's over at his soundcloud page. And more stuff with partner in crime Dsemba here.

Grab the track here!

Mirror State

Mirror State is a producer from Austrailia making modern, Garage influenced music with hard skipping hi hats and plenty of swing! His first release "Unsettled" will be out on B.YRSLF Division in the coming months, but until then you can have a taster, with a couple of free tracks. Grab em from the download tabs on Soundcloud players below.

Mirror State - Psychowalkman by Mirror State

Geordie Shore

Newcastle based producer Alex Ried AKA Psychonaught, has got a nice little package of his RnB resteps to share with you. He's been producing on Fruity Loops for the last 4 years and these tracks prove it's not the software you use, but how you use it. He's got a track on The Diamonds in The Rough EP on Formant Recordings, and his own Vibes EP on Kursed Recordings.

These tracks remind me of when there was a Garage remix of every RnB tune in the charts, but done with a modern take and alot more subtlety. Kinda reminiscent of Burial who I know is a big influence on him.

Here's a little taste...

Psychonaught - One Wish [Free Download] by Psychonaught

And you can download all 5 of the resteps here!

Psychonaught will be touching down at Total Garage over the next few months so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

Late Xmas Gift From Zed Bias

These have been around since Christmas, but as I only launched the blog yesterday I couldn't post this until now, but it is well worth posting!

If you missed this I'll let Zed explain in his own words.

"MERRY XMAS!! To celebrate a great year I've decided to share a selection of 20 Zed Bias and Phuturistix remixes, rare bootlegs and instrumentals from between 1998 and 2000. About 6 years ago I had lost a box of DAT tapes and randomly found them again this year... these DATs contain all my early recordings and here I've selected some cuts that are unavailable digitally anywhere and I've had them remastered so they are ready for bangin, in the car, in the club or on your ipod.... Enjoy!"

That's right 20 tracks from this legend of Garage and Dubstep all for free here!

Wanted to post the players for a couple of my favourites, but soundcloud's being screwy and wont give me the code to do it. Will try and get them up when they get it sorted.

Kontigo "The Lost Hours EP"

Gotta give you a heads up on upcoming debut release of an old friend Kontigo. Also a great beatboxer, he used to perform at the first night I ever ran in London many years ago. I wasn't even aware he was producing until he hit me up with these tracks yesterday, and what a pleasant surprise!

The EP features some beautiful forward thinking 2 step tracks, with sweet melodies and great vocals, as well as a remix from Future Garage's golden boy Submerse, which goes for a harder dancefloor approach to the original.

'Believe' rolls in on a wave of atmospheric euphoria, post-rave synths guiding you higher alongside the soulful vocal that underpins this garage anthem in the making. Glittering strings and melodies interweave with slow-motion bass pressure to create a piece of music that seems timeless, regardless of any genre or style.
Kontigo - Believe - SLM009 by slimetime

'Losing You' picks up the pace with an incredible garage roller, heartwarming vocal stabs cocooned in uplifting melodies that are reminiscent of the golden days of rave music. Skittering percussion will lead you on a total trip, but when the four to the floor kicks in...well...game over!
Kontigo - Losing You - SLM009 by slimetime

'Here I Come' warps the template of the previous tracks, combining garage and dubstep pattern switches to devestating effect. Perfect for that strange time post-rave and pre-comedown, the melody will have you rushing all over again before the bassweight kicks this firmly back on the dancefloor.
Kontigo - Here I Come - SLM009 by slimetime

And although I prefer the original figure it's worth posting the Submerse Remix as well, as it is Submerse after all...
Kontigo - Stars Fall (Submerse Mix) - SLM009 by slimetime

Out 21st Feb on Slime Recording, through Juno Download and all good digital retailers.

And be sure to check out all the other great stuff on Kontogo's soundcloud.

Got this cheeky mash up of Magnetic Man's "I Need Air" with classic Garage roller "Pulse X" courtesy of Seb Martisau, one of the key figures behind legendary Manchester night Murkage. Download free from the tab on the right of the player!

I Need Pulse X (martisau Bootleg Remix) by martisau

Seb's mixing has come on leaps and bounds since I first met him and he has a real ear for tunes that will work well together. Check out his sound cloud page where you can get a couple of his mixes, and plenty more of his bootlegs, including his DJ Zinc/Murkage mash up that's been getting loads of play on 1Xtra recently.

Total Garage Vol 3

Total Garage took a break over the summer only to find out on our return to Manchester that Happiness, the venue we'd previously used had been shut down. Total Garage was officially homeless!

Luckily we had a perfect new location fall in our laps thanks to Gaz Chubb from Joshua Brooks who'd been championing our night from day one. And even tho our launch night fell during reading week (Not the best time for clubs in a city that relies on its student population), we still smashed it!

This is my personal favourite mix of the series so far, and features some great vocal cuts from back in the day, as well as fresh new anthems such as JME's take on Man Like Me's London Town.

1. Copasetic- Degree
2. Baby D versus Trick Or Treat- Let Me Be Your Fantasy
3. Hi Grade- The Jug Feat. Masters of The Ceremony- Do You Really Like It? (Larry Sun Mash)
4. Man Like Me- London Town (JME Rmx)
5. DJ Deekline Feat MC Hyperactive- Sexy Cinderalla
6. Lovestation- Teardrops (Flava Mix)
7. King Thing- Ballad of The Broken Nail
8. Funkstar Deluxe- Easy (Canblaster Rosewood Rework)
9. Ellie Goulding- Starry Eyed (Dom HZ Rmx)
10. Andre 3000- Prototype (Dragon Remix)

Total Garage Vol 2

The 2nd instalment of the Total Garage mix series came out just before we did an unofficial after party for Manchester's massive 1 day festival Park Life. Most of the big artists who played that day went to the official after party at Sound Control, but we were honoured to have Buraka Som Sistema come down to party with us.

Once again we were amazed by the turn out, people were actually saying they'd had more fun at our party then they'd had at the festival!

1. Snoop & Justin Timberlake- Signs (Dragon Rmx)
2. DJ Luck & Mc Neat- Masterblaster 2000
3. Doolally- Straight From the Heart
4. B-15 Project Featuring Crissy D & Lady G- Girls Like Us
5. Hottabski- Art of Work
6. Danny J. Lewis- Spend The Night (Top Cat Radio Edit)
7. Art Tee Ash- Loved By
8. Shanks & Bigfoot- Sweet Like Chocolate
9. Adam F- Circles (Dragon Rmx)
10- Strickly Dubz- Realise

Total Garage Vol 1

Might as well start where it all began. This is the 1st promo mix that was done for the launch of Total Garage back in May 2010.

Myself and a few friends felt that there wasn't any nights in Manchester dedicated to garage. Lots of nights where playing a bit of garage amongst genres derived from it such as, Dubstep & UK Funky, but there was nothing exclusively "Garage". It wasn't that we thought we'd found a gap in the market, we just wanted to put the night on for fun, as there was no one else doing it.

We couldn't believe the reception, when we completely rammed out the venue without printing a single flyer or poster!

Garage means different things to different people. Obviously everyone loves the old stuff, but now a whole new generation is getting into it post Dubstep, and we aim to represent Garage for everything it is, was, and can be.

1. KP & Envy- Shorty Swing My Way
2. Amar- Sometimes It snows In April
3. DJ Luck & MC Neat- Little Bit Of Luck
4. Craig David- Time To Party (Dragon Rmx)
5. Bass City Rollaz- Feel Tha Bass
6. The Garage All Stars- Vulture (???Rmx)
7. Monz- In My Head
8. Agent X- Decoy (Feat Fat Man Scoop Party Anthem Vocal)
9. 3 Of A Kind- Baby Cakes
10. Connected Ft. Max’C- A Feeling
11. The XX- Crystalized (Dark Sky Rmx)
