Future Garage

Found this CD in a charity shop many years ago. It originally came on the cover of Sleaze Nation magazine back in april 2003 and was the 1st use of the term "Future Garage."

“I guess it made sense to be called 'future garage' at the time, as it was a progression from the sound being played before that stage. 'Dubstep' didn't encapsulate the genre yet because there were different styles being played. You had the breaky garage which was the kind of stuff Zinc was making, and 2-step with the hard basslines which was the stuff myself, El-B, Zed Bias and Oris came with. When the half step sound really started to come through later, then the word 'dubstep' was used and the sound came into itself. But in 2003 it was still undefined.”- J Da Flex

Vinyl and Voicemails

Came across this a few weeks ago and it really made my day!

Robbie T and Phonetix have put out an entire album that is available for donations, (or free but u shud donate sumin u bunch of cheeky freeloaders!) It's packed full of awesome material with a nice range of styles that are all still very dancefloor orientated.

One of my top tracks on here is Phonetix 2 step mix of Mr Faizer "back in the day" which is one of my favourite MC based garage tracks at the moment. I always enjoy lyrics about struggling to come up in music, as I feel like its something alot of us can relate to. And the track is pure bouncy vibes!

My other 2 favourites are Robbie T's beautifully chopped up 4x4 remixes of "Mrs Jones" and Bill Withers "Lovely Day" which he's brilliantly re titled "Tetley Riddim."

Have a quick listen to the albums promo mini mix below if your not convinced, but this album is easily worth donating a fiver for the 3 tracks mentioned alone!

Free Groove Chronicles Remix

Found this free download from the legend that is Groove Chronicles, lurking on soundcloud. Thought I better post it here. Download from the tab on the right of player.

Silly Sonic

Submerse and Resketch do something fun and bassy with music from classic Video Game Sonic The Hedgehog 2. This is from back in 2009 and isn't meant to be anything serious, maybe just a Garage homage to their favourite game. If you fancy downloading it you can grab it here. Not exactly the sort of thing I'll be playing out, but still pretty funny, and they use the sound effects from the game really well!

Total Garage 4th March 2011

Total Garage is back keeping it strictly 2 Step and 4x4 all night long!

This month we have special guests Dom Hz and Psychonaught, both representing the north, proving that garage ain't just "A London Thing".

Dom Hz- Dom makes loads of great music in various styles, but will be doing an exclusive Old Vs New Garage set for us. His Garage productions are cutting edge, whilst still retaining an old skool feel, rather than getting too over experimental. You can download his "Cheeky Remix Album" completely free from the link below and see what you think!

Psychonaught- This Newcastle based producer started out making Gabba (!?!) then moved on to Dub Step and Garage. We're glad he did, as his deep 2-Step/RnB vibes are sure to blow up the spot!
Grab his free RnB Resteps EP here.

Total Garage Vol 5 Mixed By Resketch

Last week was great for us! We hosted rooms at 2 massive events and launched this blog. Last Thursday we brought the bass to the basement of Sound Control, for Drop the Mustard's latest party featuring a headlining spot from Aeroplane in the main room, and on Saturday we hosted Club Academy at Manchester uni's student festival Pangaea. For this we built our own custom made Total Garage DJ Booth so expect to see some pictures of that in action soon.

Thanks to all the DJ's that played for us over the 2 events, Oldboy, Kilic, Roops and Polka. Big Up!

Now onto this week...

This Friday we are back at our regular home of Joshua Brooks (Manchester City Life's best venue 2010), with King Thing and Resketch from Night Audio dropping in to give us a 2 hr B2B showcase of their original tracks and releases, alongside some of their favorite garage anthems.

Supporting them will be Myself and Polka as well as newcomer to Total Garage, Humbug.

Check out the facebook event page here.

To get you warmed up we are proud to have Resketch take over the mixing duties on Total Garage Vol 5. Listen and download from the official FM player below!

It's a Smith Ting!

Got an exclusive banger for the blog from Murkage Cartel's most accomplished producer Smith! This is hot off the press, just been bounced down and sent over so it's fresher than the fresh prince eating a bowl of fresh fruit.

He's also got loads of great tracks, remixes and edits covering many different styles and genre's over at his soundcloud page. And more stuff with partner in crime Dsemba here.

Mirror State

Mirror State is a producer from Austrailia making modern, Garage influenced music with hard skipping hi hats and plenty of swing! His first release "Unsettled" will be out on B.YRSLF Division in the coming months, but until then you can have a taster, with a couple of free tracks. Grab em from the download tabs on Soundcloud players below.

Geordie Shore

Newcastle based producer Alex Ried AKA Psychonaught, has got a nice little package of his RnB resteps to share with you. He's been producing on Fruity Loops for the last 4 years and these tracks prove it's not the software you use, but how you use it. He's got a track on The Diamonds in The Rough EP on Formant Recordings, and his own Vibes EP on Kursed Recordings.

These tracks remind me of when there was a Garage remix of every RnB tune in the charts, but done with a modern take and alot more subtlety. Kinda reminiscent of Burial who I know is a big influence on him.

Here's a little taste...

Psychonaught - One Wish [Free Download] by Psychonaught

And you can download all 5 of the resteps here!

Psychonaught will be touching down at Total Garage over the next few months so keep your eyes and ears peeled!

Late Xmas Gift From Zed Bias

These have been around since Christmas, but as I only launched the blog yesterday I couldn't post this until now, but it is well worth posting!

If you missed this I'll let Zed explain in his own words.

"MERRY XMAS!! To celebrate a great year I've decided to share a selection of 20 Zed Bias and Phuturistix remixes, rare bootlegs and instrumentals from between 1998 and 2000. About 6 years ago I had lost a box of DAT tapes and randomly found them again this year... these DATs contain all my early recordings and here I've selected some cuts that are unavailable digitally anywhere and I've had them remastered so they are ready for bangin, in the car, in the club or on your ipod.... Enjoy!"

That's right 20 tracks from this legend of Garage and Dubstep all for free here!

Wanted to post the players for a couple of my favourites, but soundcloud's being screwy and wont give me the code to do it. Will try and get them up when they get it sorted.
